The historic sailing trawler "Excelsior", based in Lowestoft, joined the Cirdan Sailing Trust fleet in 2005. The Excelsior Trust and The Cirdan Sailing Trust now work together to optimise the ship's sailing itinerary, particularly for young people and disadvantaged groups.

Since 1989, "Excelsior" has been a regular competitor in the annual Tall Ships' Race.
